AFC CUP 2006 - STAGS ON TRACK
Article Posted : 07th September 2006

AFC Cup 2006 - Stags starting line-up against Selangor FA at Tampines Stadium on 2 May 06

HYUNDAI – sponsored Tampines Rovers FC, chasing a slew of titles in the 2006 season, are well on track for their biggest prize yet – the AFC Cup.

Having finished on top of Group F table with a flourish of four goals in Hong Kong, the Stags are looking forward to going one better than last year’s exit at the quarter-final stage.

But first, they have to face Jordan ’s Al Wihdat in the two-leg quarter-finals in September.

Al Wihdat, the 2005 Jordanian League Champions, qualified for the knockout stage after beating Bangladesh side Mohammedan SC 7 – 0 in Amman and 2 -1 away in the two team Group C.

In the quarter final draw made on 2 June at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, the first leg of the Tampines-Al Wihdat clash will be on 12 September at the Tampines Stadium, with the return leg set for 19 September in Amman.

In last year’s competition, Tampines Rovers lost both their home and away quarter-final matches 1-0 to Jordan’s Al Faisaly, which eventually went on to clinch the 2005 title.

This time around, however, the two time S-League champions look in fine fettle, especially Noh Alam Shah having bagged six goals in the group stage.

Things did not look good at the start of the Cup campaign, when the Stags fell to a solitary goal by Malaysia Super League side Selangor in the opening game in Kuala Lumpur.

But on home ground at the Tampines Stadium, the Stags bounced back with their first win, beating Hong Kong Happy Valley 3-1. Thanks to diminutive Aliff Shafaein scoring the equalizer, Alam Shah went on to score a brace in the second half.

The Stags next hosted Cup debutant Hurriyah SC of the Maldives, scoring a comfortable 3 -1 victory with Mirko Grabovac finding the net for the opening salvo, followed by a goal each

from Aliff Shafaein and Peres De Oliveira in the second half.

In the return away leg, it was just as easy for Tampines when Rafi’s two similar goals from corner-kick situations in the first half paved the way for Aliff Shafaein and Alam Shah to seal the match 4 – 0.

But the stags badly needed a win against Selangor at Tampines to stand a chance of topping the group. And revenge was sweet when they edged out fighting Selangor 3-2 to lead the group on goal difference.

New signing Peres De Oliveira (2) and Mirko Grabovac found the net to send Tampines into a must win situation. And the Stags duly obliged in the final group match away in Hong Kong.

Even without three key players out on suspension – defender Sead Muratovic, striker Mirko and midfielder Rafi Ali – the Stags stamped their superiority and saw Alam Shah hitting a hat-trick and wing back Ibrahim Noh netting a goal, his first for the Club, to overrun Happy Valley AA 4 – 0 at the Mongkok Stadium.

Hence the Stags topped their group like they did in 2005. This time they will be playing their 1st leg at home and are determined to go one step further by crossing the quarter finals hurdle.
